She has written 60 books translated into 20 languages, including short fiction, poetry, children’s books and graphic novels. Friends and business associates make it clear that Margaret will tell you nothing other than what she really thinks, and Atwood never seems to doubt her ability or her possibility, refreshing for a woman coming into herself in the 1950’s and 60’s. Her work has been described as beautiful, inspiring, and unsettling, as has she. When asked by the filmmaker what her earliest memory is, she responds that it is of snow in Ottawa but, “Let’s not do the psychological deep dive.” She isn’t joking. Though she is quick to break into a smile, there is a stern, almost surly, undertone to Atwood. In the last ten years, her novels have become almost painfully relevant as they focus on the suppression of the underclasses, damage to the environment, and the danger wrought by the dissolution of a democratic society. Her characters will always come up against their own morality and that of the societies in which they live. Her writing shows us the destructive tendencies of the human race. Fans still line up in droves to meet her and tell her how she has changed their lives. She and her work are as relevant as ever. With her writing, (typically categorized as dystopian fiction or speculative fiction), Margaret Atwood seems capable of embracing and exposing the truth of the darkness that lurks in the shadows of our world. Through interviews with the author herself, close friends and relatives, and old and not-so-old footage, we get a picture of who this author is and how she came to be the influential and lauded Canadian icon she is today. The 1 hour and 33 minute documentary follows Atwood as she travels the world in her 80th year.
